Brush is the mess that grows when ground sits idle. Multiflora rose, bush honeysuckle, autumn olive, wild grape, blackberry cane and greenbrier take the openings first. Volunteer cedar, callery pear, sassafras, box elder, cherry and ash saplings follow. Our tracked forestry mulcher eats standing stems up to about 6 inches in diameter. Stems 6 to 10 inches go slower and often still work, one at a time. Anything bigger is tree service work, and we say so at the estimate.
The finish is a flat layer of wood chips over the ground you just cleared. Stumps get ground 1 to 2 inches below grade so a mower rides right over them. Topsoil and roots stay put, so the ground is stable the day we leave. The chip layer holds soil against erosion and slows regrowth for a season or two. Burning looks cheap until you read the calendar. In unincorporated parts of Ohio, open burning is banned from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. in five months. Those months are March, April, May, October and November, and the rule covers brush, weeds and grass. The state points to spring fire danger before green-up and dry leaves in fall. Warm, windy weather in both seasons adds to it. That takes five months of daylight off the table, and those are the months people most want the mess gone.
Inside a town the rule is tighter. Ohio EPA treats everything inside a municipality as a restricted area. It adds a one mile ring around any city of 10,000 or more. Mansfield is well over that size, so a wide ring around it is restricted too. Burning land clearing waste in a restricted area needs Ohio EPA permission or a permitted air-curtain burner. Grinding sidesteps the whole question. We do not haul brush away and we do not burn it. Every stem goes back on your ground as chips.
The work tends to land in a few familiar spots. A yard edge or drive that brush has closed in. Road frontage that hides the mailbox and the ditch. A parcel someone just bought that has sat untouched for years. An idle farm corner or field edge that the combine keeps shrinking around. We work the flat farm ground north of Mansfield and Ashland. We also work the rolling wooded hills south toward Bellville, Butler and Loudonville. The tracked machine holds slopes and soft spots that wheeled gear cannot.
Pace runs about half an acre to two acres a day, depending on how thick it is. Most residential jobs finish in one to three days. Late summer through winter is prime season here, and frozen or dry ground carries the machine cleanly. Wet spring clay is the one stretch we sometimes steer around, to keep from leaving ruts.
