How much does land clearing cost per acre in Ohio?
The 2026 market ranges are consistent across every major cost guide: lightly wooded ground clears for roughly $500 to $2,300 per acre, and heavily wooded ground runs $3,000 to $6,000 per acre. Brush-only ground comes in far below both. Where your parcel lands depends almost entirely on what is standing on it.
Our land clearing estimates are free and written after a walk of the ground, and this guide explains the number before you ever get one.
The density table
| What is on the ground | Typical per-acre range | The read |
|---|---|---|
| Brush and briars only | Low hundreds | A mowing or light mulching pass |
| Light woods, saplings under 3 in. | $500 – $2,300 | Fast mulcher work |
| Medium growth, trees 3–6 in. | $1,500 – $3,500 | The standard mulching job |
| Heavy woods, 6 in. and up | $3,000 – $6,000 | Slow, deliberate clearing |
Midwest mulching work specifically tends to average near the middle, around $1,500 to $4,000 per acre for the growth classes our machine handles. Terrain and access push the number inside each band: steep ground, wet corners, and parcels the machine cannot reach easily all add hours.
Mulching vs. dozer clearing: the honest comparison
Traditional clearing digs everything out, piles it, and hauls it away. Every step bills: excavator hours, trucks, disposal fees, and then the ground it leaves behind is bare dirt that needs grading and seeding, and grading alone can run another several hundred to several thousand dollars. Industry pricing puts traditional clearing at roughly $2,000 to $6,000 per acre against mulching’s $1,500 to $4,000 on comparable ground, which is where the 20 to 40 percent savings figure comes from.
Forestry mulching collapses those steps into one. The machine grinds standing growth into chips that stay on the ground, so there is no hauling, no burning, no disposal fee, and no bare dirt to repair. For brush and small-to-medium trees, it is the cheaper path per acre almost every time.
Where dozer-style clearing earns its premium: ground that must end up bare and buildable. Stumps out, roots grubbed, dirt ready for a pad. Our mulcher grinds stumps low but does not grub them out, and we say so on every lot clearing quote rather than let anyone find out at excavation time.
Why small parcels price high per acre
Mobilization. The trailer, the fuel, and the operator cost the same whether the machine cuts one acre or ten, so most outfits carry a minimum charge and small jobs carry the fixed cost on fewer acres. The flip side: adding work to a scheduled visit is the cheapest clearing you will ever buy. A fence row, a trail, a field corner, once the machine is on your ground, marginal acres are the bargain.
Getting from range to real number
No range survives contact with a specific parcel. Stem size, density, terrain, access, and what you want the ground to become all move the quote, and none of them can be judged from the road, let alone over the phone. We walk the ground free anywhere in our 75-mile radius around Mansfield, and the written number reflects your acres, not an average.
